Usofuki Type Kabuki Mask

Item #11668
Edo - Meiji 19th Century
8.25 x 6 x 3 inches

This 19th century usofuki type Kabuki mask was made by Shunsaku, and is signed Sakai Osamu as the owner. The word usofuki refers to the mask's pursed or whistling lips which matches the mask's absurd features with a ridiculous expression. Usofuki represents such diverse roles as a scarecrow, a stone god, the spirit of a mosquito, a locust, and even a vegetable, mushroom, or fruit. From the Oliver Statler collection.
