Gold Lacquer Seated Lord Box
Item #10257
Early Meiji ca 1870
1-5/8 x 4-1/4 x 3-3/4 inches
Small early Meiji (ca 1870) lacquer over wood box in the shape of a seated lord. This small lacquer box has been created in the form of a Japanese lord. The presumption is that this is the image of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan that ruled until 1867. This beautiful little box has an interior of nashiji. The interior of the cover has the image of a lord harvesting pine, with an attendant holding his sword. On all 3 sides of the exterior is the image of a peony and phoenix. It is gorgeously sculpted and done in the maki-e style. This piece has the note that came with it from the original collector, that it was purchased in July 1976 for the sum of 685,000 yen. The collector most likely purchased this at the Imperial Hotel in Japan, since other parts of this collection came from that source.
