19th century 6-chambered bamboo scholar's box. The cover of this Chinese box shows a young woman with a fan in a quiet garden setting with a tradtional fence in the background. There is a poem in the upper left corner aluding to meditating in a spring garden. The leaves in the lower left and upper right corners are tropical in nature. The Chinese scholars had a custom of thinking about the comfort of the Southern China gardens, as in Canton and Fukian. There is a famous painting there called The Seven Scholars of the Bamboo Grove. The scholars wished to think of natural settings, free of the intrigue, stress, and competition of their official postings. There is 1 long chamber in this box which probably was for an ink cake; a squarish chamber, probably for a seal paste container; a medium sized vertical chamber most likely for a seal; and 2 small chambers for unknown use. The box has a gorgeous caramel color. A very unusual kind of box in the Chinese tradition. Formerly part of the Paul Spheeris collection.
