Edo Period (1600-1868) portrait of Aizen Myo-o, "Raging King of Lust". This is an icon of Aizen Myo-o, the esoteric king of light who transforms raw, raging passions into the lust for enlightenment. Aizen -- literally "Love Stained" -- represents the belief that the power of intense desire should not be suppressed but rather redirected towards a high purpose. In this striking portrait, Aizen is set in a blazing circle, his body dark red, with three eyes, a fierce expression, wearing a lion crown, and with six arms holding: an arrow, a lotus, a vajra, a bell, a magic fist, and a bow. Aizen is actually drawing his bow and arrow here ready to shoot, straight to a lover's heart (like Cupid), or aiming for the ultimate goal -- complete awakening. Aizen sits on a Lotus Vase; from the base of the vase magic jewels issue forth. Aizen is the patron of lovers, sex workers, dyers, and antique dealers. Aizen Myo-o was also the principal deity of the Tachikawa-Ryu, the Shingon sect that taught, "Enlightened sexual intercourse is the quickest way to Buddhahood." Paintings of this kind are not attributed to individual artists but to temple ateliers. (Researched by John Stevens.)
