Meiji Period (1868-1912) Aka Kutani dish. This is a very typcal style of Aka Kutani at the turn of the century period. There are stylized cherry blossom elements painted on the interior with cloud forms with small gold elements. The bottom of the dish has almost a Japanese mon or crest like form. The whole of the bottom is bordered with various leaf like forms. They are not really intended to be a portrait of a particular plant. They have simply evolved away from the plant forms into decorative forms that the Kutani painters developed. Formerly part of the Paul Spheeris collection.
