Also known as:
Louis Choris was an artist-explorer of the nineteenth century. He was born on March 22, 1795, in the Ukraine of German-Russian parents. He spent much of his formative years in Germany, and in 1815 set sail from St. Petersburg, Russia, as a draftsman for an around the world expedition funded by the Chancellor of the Russian Empire. During this 3-year voyage he drew sketches in pencil and ink to supplement the written and artifact record of the expedition. Upon returning to Europe in 1818 he prepared watercolor drawings based upon his sketches.
