Bowl shaped Kutani ware charger, ca 1900. This large bowl shaped charger has a brocade design border and 3 image panels. One panel is of 2 cranes, representing felicity in marriage. Another is an image of a country pavilion. The largest panel is of the heroine of the Heian Period, Tokiwa Gozen and her 3 children. She is escaping after her husband was killed by the Ashikaga clan. She became the mistress of the lord of that clan to save her sons, yet when they became adults Yoritomo and his brother Yoshistune avenged their father's death and founded the Kamakura shogunate.
