Buddha Mind — it can also be translated as 'Buddha Heart' — is the central pillar of Buddhism. 'A Mind like Buddha' is the core of wisdom and the source of compassion. There is a video of the Dalai Lama shedding tears while talking about Buddha Mind.
Nakano Eiken completed the extremely austere 12-year retreat at Jodo-in on Mt. Hiei. During the course of the retreat, all intercourse with the world is cut off; only one robe and one bedcover is allowed, summer and winter; meals consist of scraps left over from the main monastery; and only three hours of sleep are allowed each day. The hermit monk spends his days chanting, meditating, and above all, keeping the temple and the surrounding grounds spotlessly clean. After successfully completing the retreat, Eiken became a Buddhist activist, teaching both in Japan and abroad.
