A well tended persimmon tree
Takes eight years to bear fruit,
A Daruma (Zen master) needs nine years of wall-gazing
To realize enlightenment.
It is not a matter of choosing—
There is no long or short course!
Brushed by Debuchi
The inscription may be by Debuchi Katsuji (1878-1947), a diplomat who once served as Ambassador to the United States from 1928-1934. The painter of this fierce Daruma is unknown but clearly a professional artist.
