17th century Japanese painting of Fudo Myoo. Wrathful deities like Fudo Myoo are protectors of the Buddha. His fangs are long and menacing; his sword is threatening; and the lasso is a warning to those that will not heed the Dharma. He is a mighty figure with the fire behind him that burns away desire. The painting is somewhat faded and there are losses resulting from years of hanging.
