Georg James

Georg James was born in 1941 in the Birkshire area of Massachusetts. He later moved to New York City where he studied theatrical design with Lester Polakov. After joining the New York Scenic Artists Union, he designed five plays for the inaugural year of the Seattle Repertory Theatre. This was followed by seasons of set design at regional theatres in Florida, New York, and California. Twenty years of film art direction for major media advertising including IBM, Coca-Cola, and Mercedes-Benz then complemented the theatrical ventures. Looking for a more personal involvement with art, he and his partner, John Dinsmore, moved to Hawaii in 1995. After their arrival, murals and artwork were commissioned for the Kapiolani Women's and Children's Hospital, the Rainbow Lanai and Kalia Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, and many private residences. They are prominently featured in Mary Philpotts McGrath's book, 'Hawaii, A Sense of Place'. Designing the Hawaiian Cultural Centers for the fleet of NCL ships that cruise the islands proved another interesting challenge. In 2010 Georg and John were involved in a year long project designing and executing murals for the lobby and lounge spaces of the new Trump Beachwalk Hotel in Waikiki. In 2011 they created three whimsical marine themed paintings for the guest suites at Aulani, the Disney resort at Ko Olina. They also designed and painted a 30 foot vintage style map mural of the Hawaiian Islands for their tour office. Recently they have completed two Hawaiian themed murals for the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki and installed two paintings in the newly refurbished lobby of the Ali'i Tower at Hilton Hawaiian Village. A large three dimensional map of Lanai complete with tapa embellishments was recently installed at the Manele Bay Resort on Lanai. In June 2014 they created a multimedia exhibit honoring the Beatles' 50th anniversary for the Hollywood Bowl Museum,
