Isshi Monju (1608-1646) was ordained a Shingon monk in 1626 but then converted to the Rinzai Sect under the influence of the famed Zen Master Takuan. Isshi was the Dharma-heir of another illustrious Zen master, Gudo Toshoku. Isshi was the favored teacher of the Emperor Gomizuno-o, and he associated with Kobori Enshu, Shokado, and many other cultural luminaries of the day. Isshi was also a master of the Tea Ceremony. As is seen in this painting, Isshi's technical ability was on the level of a professional artist. Isshi died at the young age of thirty-nine.
