Olena is a healing plant of Hawaii, thought to be brought to the islands by early Polynesian voyagers. Better known as the root turmeric, in Hawaii it is not only used for its medicinal properties, but as a dye for kapa (tapa) and as a sacred plant of purification. Mayumi Oda is well known for her teaching of organic farming and the belief that food is medicine.
