"[Between heaven and earth] there is one treasure hidden among the mountains!"

The inscription is from Case 62 of the koan collection Blue Cliff Record. Master Unmon said to the assembled monks, "Between heaven and earth there is one treasure hidden among the mountains." The koan literally says, "…hidden in the form of a mountain," mountain representing the realm of nature, both mother-nature and one's own individual nature. The hidden treasure is the mind of enlightenment represented in this Zenga by the dynamic enso. The brushstrokes here are kick-ass. Despite being badly mistreated by time and poorly taken care of, this enso can't be killed off. The artist was a Rinzai Zen master but he has hidden himself so we don't know his details. Looks old, but no way of knowing how old. In other words, like all good enso, it is timeless.
