Hinasama Dolls, painting and inscription by Rengetsu

このとのに けふ咲く花は
いく春のも々悦の
はじめ なるん
    蓮月七十八才

As an offering today
To this lord and lady
Freshly opened peach blossoms.
The joy of countless springs
Is once again ours.
Rengetsu age 78

A pair of Himasama Dolls, representing the Emperor and Empress (and by extension all couples), is displayed on Girls' Day, the third day of the third month. The Doll Festival is an important event in Japan and every household has a set of dolls to be shown. Also, this kind of Hinasama Dolls painting is often hung in the family alcove during this period. Peach blossoms appear around the same time of the year, making the occasion doubly festive. Rengetsu did a number of Hinasama paintings in color and in monochrome, as we have here, and in conjunction with Tomioka Tessai (Tessai did the painting and Rengetsu added the inscription].
Published as #135 in the Black Robe, White Mist: Art of the Japanese Buddhist Nun Rengetsu exhibition catalogue (but misidentified as a joint Rengetsu / Tessai work).
