18th century Japanese makette of a Heian Period courtier figure. It is a wooden carving, probably hinoki. This small Japanese makette for a larger sculpture was deaccessioned from the Cleveland Art Museum and still carries the accession number on the bottom. This was bought together with several other studio works that had been donated to the Cleveland Museum at one point. The quality of the carving and the image is very high. It was undoubtedly deaccessioned in favor of purchasing a larger or more showy piece of some kind. This figure has a wonderful subtlety to it.
