14th century Southeast Asian Martaban stoneware pot. These storage vessels were produced in Southeast Asia for the purpose of moving grains, food stuffs, sauces and flour in trade with China, Indonesia and island kingdoms. The lip of this pot is folded out in order that a piece of leather could be stretched over the opening and tied with a rope. The four sculptures on the sides are lugs intended to carry the rope or anchor the vessel in the hold of a ship.
