Japanese granite carving of a monk carrying a lamp, ca 1850. This kind of sculpted figure can be found on pathways in forests and gardens throughout Japan. The figure is a bald monk with a cloth over his head as he travels in the night carrying a lamp. The image is a very simple kind of metaphor of spiritual enlightenment (the lamp) being carried through the darkness (ignorance of the Dharma).
