Chinese bamboo carving of a monk as Samatabhadra sitting on an elephant. This Chinese bamboo carving is of a monk with a Buddhist stura in his hands. He is seated on an elephant. One of the most important Bodhisattvas is Samatabhadra, who sits beside the Buddha on his vehicle, the elephant. The monk calls to mind that Samatabhadra represents conscious benevolence. Bamboo is difficult to carve. This bamboo is from the root section of the plant.
