A Japanese demon (oni) appears blindfolded, proferring an eye in his palm - refers to the old phrase 'giving someone the eye'. Sometimes malevolent but usually comical, these squatty creatures appear repeatedly in Chinese and Japanese art, often as repentant figures subdued by the good guys. The protagonist here leans on a huge brush and presents himself in the highly ritualized stance assumed by yakuza (Japanese gangsters) when formally introducing themselves. The digit of his little finger is missing, signifying a self-mutilation to atone to his boss for wrongdoing. His stance also echoes that of a noseriding surfer, as he appears in the hook of a tubing wave.
