BUTSU
85 year old Gocho

Gocho was born into a temple family in Higo. He was ordained a Tendai monk at nineteen and trained on Mt. Hiei. Gocho became widely known as a scholar, a master of esoteric science, and a first-rate painter of conventional Buddhist iconography as well as Zen calligraphy. Gocho was noted for his strict observance of the monastic precepts. Gocho was further famed as a wonder-worker and exorcist. His incantations were so effective, Gocho was once held captive by a Daimyo who was so in awe of the master's healing powers he was loath to let him go. Gocho was a close friend of Sengai.
