One's coming years
Should be celebrated
As being like the two fresh needles
Of an auspicious evergreen pine.
Painting: Year of the Metal Boar (1851) brushed on new Year's Day by the eccentric Nankei
Gotoda Nankei (1807-1867) was a professional painter originally from Awa. He moved to Okazaki where Rengetsu was living and became a disciple of the famous Yamamoto Baietsu. Nankei was said to have had a kind and good-natured disposition. Done when Rengetsu turned 60, this is a very early example of a Rengetsu joint work. Since they lived in the same neighborhood, Rengetsu and Nankei likely brushed this during the New Year's celebrations.
