THE OLD FELLOW TAKUAN

玄 GEN is the character for "fundamental principle," "deepest mysteries," "hidden meaning."
黙 MOKU is the character for "intense silence."
々 DO is the character for DITTO.

The brushwork displayed here is dramatic, bold and dynamic. The piece is deeply impressive, and as powerful and creative as any modern work of art. Takuan Soho (1543-1645) is one of the most influential Zen masters in world cultural history. Takuan's writings on Zen, the martial arts, and literature are read in translation worldwide. His Zenga are also extensively collected at home and abroad.
There is an authentication letter by Daitoku-ji abbot (#511) Tachibana Daibi who died in 2005 at the age of 106.
