This is a small sencha tea cup inscribed with a poem by the Buddhist nun Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875). She is one of Japan's finest female artists, famed for her pottery, calligraphy, and paintings.

The inscription, winding around the the tea cup, is Chidori naku/kamo gawa zuzumi/tsuki fukete/sode ni oboyuru/yowa no hatsushimo

As the moon ascends,
Plovers cry along
The Kamo River--
Night deepens, first frost
Settles on my sleeves.
