このきミ乃 めでたきふしを 重ねつ々
未のよ長き ためし也けり
蓮月

This gentleman (bamboo)
Piles up knot after knot,
Year after year,
Flourishing quietly,
An example to us.
Rengetsu

This is an example of a Rengetsu-yaki piece made entirely by Rengetsu herself. The poem says we should age gracefully like a bamboo, quietly piling up years and (hopefully) wisdom. Since this poem is inscribed on a sake cup there is another meaning: fushi, a bamboo knot, the node that appears after each year of growth, can also mean "no death," i.e., immortal. Late in life, Rengetsu enjoyed drinking sake as a kind of elixir. In another poem, Rengetsu said that sipping sake makes you feel like an immortal.
