Shinkyo means "state of mind" but the phrase connotes a gradual deepening of one's understanding, a more settled and contented attitude. Gempo was perhaps the greatest and most influential of 20th century Zen masters. Gempo did not learn how to read and write until later in life and his brushwork is simple, direct, and unaffected.
