19th century carved cedar image of a shishi, originally used as the base for a small okimono. This item was deaccessioned from the Cleveland Art Museum, and was undoubtedly a markette for a much larger piece. The shishi is the protector of the Buddha, and usually there will be a male, female, and pup sculptures at the entry of the temples, especially the frontal approach to the temple, because the shishi was considered strong enough to guard the Buddha.
