19th century bronze Thai Yai Buddha seated in the mudra of Calling The Earth To Witness. The Thai Yai people live north of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and occupy a large community of the northwest section close to Burma (Myanmar). This Buddha shows the association with Burmese art in its closeness to the stylization of Mandalay Buddhist figures. The bronze figure here has a rather thin and elongated body. The fire of the usnisa is so abstracted that it has almost a bottle form. The fabrics covering the figure all terminate in undulating wave forms. The face very certainly reflects the Shan taste for the evocation of innocence in the disciplines of Buddhism.
