Japan was forever changed by the opening of Yokohama to trade with foreign countries. To satisfy the great Japanese curiosity about the foreign settlement in Yokohama, a great number of woodblock prints were published. These prints came to be called Yokohama-e: depicting the new port town, people from foreign lands with their novel forms of dress and entertainments, modern forms of transportation, etc.
This print is of an English couple from a series entitled People of Foreign Lands.
Framed in acid-free mats and Japanese style silver lacquered frame with ultraviolet-filtering Plexiglas.
