In Japanese mythology, foxes are trickster figures. 'Fox fires' were often purported to be seen in the woods at night, created by the fox stroking its tail to produce fire. Part of the fox's ritual prior to shape-shifting (usually into a beautiful young woman, bewitching men with its sexual magnetism) was the placing of a human skull on its head.
