18th-19th century Tibetan copper prayer wheel. The prayer wheel in Tibet takes several forms. Some are built into the monastery and are turned as a person walks by -- these are usually quite large. This is a hand held example that is turned by revolving the the hand. Inside, prayers in paper form could be added, as is the case in this instance. The outside of this prayer wheel has a part of a chant or sutra written by protruding Tibetan script created by the copper repousse technique. The many turns of the wheel are the many prayers that are offered.
