Taisho Period (1912-1926) unsigned 2-panel screen of 2 women in a storm. Excellent condition with minor restorations. This image of women forging ahead against the rain and wind is a scene which Hiroshige did in a woodblock print as part of the "53 Stations of Tokaido Road". This painting is in no sense a copy of that print, but rather it is a painting that shows the influence of the old master's work. It is a great example of the taste of the Taisho Perod and its blending of Eastern and Western forms of art. The storm is not a moody, menacing event but a bright and glowing image of a squall. The background, though descriptive, is a beautiful abstraction of colors and forms.
