The second of three children, he grew up on the Windward side of Oahu where his imagination ran wild in an escape of boredom. Throughout his youth, he along with his siblings, spent much of their time on creative projects and roaming the farmland and nearby streams. He draws inspiration for his artwork from these indelible childhood images of his family´s heritage and the beauty of the natural environment.

He became inspired and spent the next couple of summers abroad before finally returning to Pietrasanta Italy to live and work independently. Although Kiyabu also works in bronze and some mixed media, stone is his primary material as he creates interpretations of his past through contemporary forms and enduring mediums. He feels fortunate to have been raised in the islands with all its beauty and diversity and hopes to create sculpture that is meaningful and true. Every work is a gesture of his life and he welcomes viewers into his thoughts and representations.
